[death eater from harry potter and the order of the phoenix - darkmark.com gallery]Death Eaters are witches and wizards who support Lord Voldemort. Among their tasks included: terrorist activities against muggles; the assassination or kidnap of important wizards that do not join willingly; reducing resistance against Voldemort; and doing battle against the Ministry of Magic, the Order of the Phoenix and anyone else that opposes Voldemort. Becoming a Death Eater is a lifetime commitment and they are expected to serve with loyalty and obedience until their death.

All Death Eaters bear a mystical brand on their left forearm called the Dark Mark, which looks like a vivid red tattoo of a skull with a snake protruding from its mouth. This brand also serves as a connection between Voldemort and his followers as the marks on Death Eaters remained as faded tattoos on the arms of its bearers during Voldemort's years out of power. As Voldemort's strength increased, they became progressively clearer and more pronounced. When Voldemort touches the mark on one Death Eater, it will burn black to alert them of his summons and were expected to apparate to his side.

Death Eaters typically wear ceremonial attire of a black, hooded robe and a white skull mask when being called by Voldemort. This attire is only worn when summoned by Voldemort, and Death Eaters dress just like any other wizard the rest of the time.

While Slytherin gets the most bad press about having descendants of Death Eaters, they are only a small portion of the Slytherin population. Additionally there are students in the other three houses that can be connected to Death Eaters (according to JKR, thus it is true.)

Ideology: - The ultimate goal of the Death Eaters is to completely destroy all wizarding families of muggle lineage and the muggle world then gain complete control over the entire wizarding world by restoring the magical community to pure-bloods. Despite this goal the number of true pure-blood wizards is actually low, and most Death Eaters are in fact half-bloods. While there are no known examples of muggle-born Death Eaters, it was stated by JKR herself that a muggle-born wizard can become one in rare circumstances.

Members: - The exact number of Death Eaters remains unknown. Based on the books, Harry Potter saw himself outnumbered by at least thirty to one during his duel against Voldemort in the graveyard. This would not include the ten Death Eaters that were in Azkaban prison still and had not been broken out yet. This would give Voldemort at least forty followers in Britain and possibly more elsewhere as was known to have two operating in countries.

Listed below are the names of the known Death Eaters and their current criminal status:
