J.K. Rowling and WB win law suit

    By Ren | September 9, 2008

A U.S. judge on Monday halted publication of an unofficial encyclopedic companion to the popular Harry Potter book series in a copyright case author J.K. Rowling argued would threaten other writers.

Judge Robert Patterson in U.S. District Court in Manhattan wrote in his opinion that an independent U.S. book publisher, RDR Books, “had failed to establish an affirmative defense of fair use” and that publication of “The Harry Potter Lexicon” should not proceed.

Read the full article and statements here.

In the mean time, the HP Lexicon website seems to haveĀ  been taken offline, something we hope is only temporary, as the HP-Lexicon is used by many for its HP facts. Even Rowling herself admitted in earlier interviews to have used the Lexicon for a quick fact look-up.

    Thanks Reuters.

Congrats to Jo! I completely sided with her on this! But I really hope that the Lexicon doesn’t stay offline!! I love it! I don’t think it should be published because it’s JKR’s information and story, but it’s an amazing website! I use it all the time, whether it’s for quick reference or the trivia bowl.

It won’t stay offline, it’s merely changing here and there and getting a new place, if I got my facts right… which is by no means certain :P

I agree too that a direct copy basically of what Rowling wrote is a bit.. too much. I own some of those other HP universe books and they are full of stuff that’s not in the Harry Potter books, I definitely see the difference that Jo was talking about.

Still I am happy for Steve that it’s finally over, it must have been a stressful and harsh time for him.
