Harry Potter for President?
By Alyssa | September 20, 2008
Half Price Books, largest family-owned new and used bookstore chain with more than 100 retail locations in 15 states, has launched a new campaign to get Americans more focused on reading during the National Literacy Month this September. This campaign seeks to promote it’s ‘Literary Party’, and so, has nominated six well-known literary characters, in which we feature our beloved wizard. Voters can go to www.halfpricebooks.com throughout all of this month and choose between Mr. Potter, Mary Poppins, Jason Bourne, Atticus Finch, Carrie Bradshaw or The Grinch, and in return, they will receive a coupon for a free campaign button that will display their favorite character’s campaign slogan.
“The election for the Literary Party candidate is a light-hearted campaign during an intense Presidential election year,” said Kathy Doyle Thomas, executive vice president of Half Price Books. “Our hopes are that the election will get people to think about their favorite book characters, and ultimately spur them to read more.”
The “winning” candidate will be announced on October 1, and all voters are encouraged to visit the site once per week to vote. Slogans for characters in the running include Harry Potter: Seeker of Equal Rights; Jason Bourne: Bourne To Be Right; Atticus Finch: In a Pinch? Vote Finch; Carrie Bradshaw: For Free Speech; Mary Poppins: The Winds of Change; and the Grinch: For a Greener America. Coupons for a free button can be redeemed at any Half Price Books location.
